Hewale Sounds is the resident group of the International Centre for African
Music and Dance (ICAMD), University of Ghana, Legon. The group is a traditional
instrumental ensemble that operates under the directorship of Emeritus
Professor J.H. Kwabena Nketia. Hewale Sounds provides concerts of traditional
African compositions arranged for traditional instruments and their contemporary
extensions. It serves as a demonstration group for ICAMDs workshops
and extension programmes.
Hewale Sounds was formally inaugurated at the Centre for National Culture,
Accra, on February 3, 1996.
The group has since performed to enthusiastic audiences at
&Mac183; Marché des Arts Spectacle Africain (MASA) in La Cote
d’Ivoire,
&Mac183; at the 23rd World Conference of International Society for
Music Education (ISME) in Pretoria in South Africa,
&Mac183; and in the International Festival of Folk Arts and Culture
in South Africa (IFFACSA) at Umtata Eastern Cape Province,
&Mac183; at Forde Folk Music Festival in Norway,
&Mac183; A joint programme with the St. Louis African Chorus in the
United States of America, while in St. Louis they had audience the Mayor
of East St. Louis, and Kathryn Dunham the renowned dance ethnographer.
&Mac183; At the International meeting and the promotion of local music
heritage in the age of Globalization, at Amman, Jordan 17th – 21st
September 2000.
&Mac183; Apart from these the group has had several performances here
in Ghana, performing to foreign heads of state and dignitaries.
